A Bewildered Conscience Blindly Groping for Clarity : Dissent is the Only Response to Manufactured Realities
Many of you might have seen this, but I thought it was worth posting in any case. Divorce Iranian Style covers the heinous state of women's rights in the matter of divorce under the Islamic republic. We are all aware of the woefully inadequate state of women's rights in this regard, but it unquestionably merits as much publicity as it can get. To say that some of the scenes in this film made my blood boil is truly an understatement. It was co-directed and written by the Iranian-British anthropologist Dr. Ziba Mir-Hosseini, author of Islam and Gender (an excellent book btw) and other books. If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth a viewing.

by Sadaia_qesa on Thu Jul 17, 2008 09:45 AM CDTWhen it comes to women's right, this Islamic law (less +/- choona zaden) is no law
and these stupid mullahs have no respect for women...
Iranian women have to be strong willed to survive.
very sad.

by Kurdish Warrior (not verified) on Wed Jul 16, 2008 02:53 PM CDTSituation is actually much worst..Evethou I support their courage and their hope for change, I have to say that as long this shia theocracy exist there won't be any reform. We need to be realistic and stop kidding ourselves.
Ironically
by Anonymous-today (not verified) on Wed Jul 16, 2008 02:15 PM CDTthe medieval sharia divorce laws oppress poor women much more in this republic of mostazafeen than the educated middle-class women who have the financial resources to hire lawyers and fight their cases as well as having better family support to see them through a divorce. Of course these laws ultimately affect all women. However this has not stopped soaring divorce rates in Iran. Another irony is that, at least among middle classes (low, middle and upper) divorce doesn't seem to be the taboo it used to be.
Its not as grim as you think
by Alborzi (not verified) on Wed Jul 16, 2008 01:08 PM CDTIts easy to stereo type Iranian women. In fact the reality is quite different. There are now more girls in the university than boys. The first Iranian to win a Nobel peace prize was a woman. The Iranian women are more
are more active than ever. Its true that there is some injustices and some women have a really hard time, but that is not specific to mullahs. Boys were always prized more than girls, my grand mother had my aunt marry when she was 14 and paid for my father to go abroad. I was sent to us, while my sister was held back in Iran (and eventually caught and killed in Iran), the Iranian women are fighting hard for their rights and are doing as good as all the dissidents.
With Shia theocracy
by Kurdish Warrior (not verified) on Wed Jul 16, 2008 01:03 PM CDTas the constitution and Mullah as the head of jury, this is what we get (denying women right)..

by Mehdi-Palang on Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:53 AM CDTPlease define for me the parameters of being a "lefty". In other words what does it mean (to you) to be a "lefty"?
In my opinion, you should stop throwing around such flagarant accusations of people being Islamist or Anti-Semitic because it detracts from the legitimacy of your statements. Didn't your bibi teach that it's not good to partake in name-calling?
IT WASN'T A QUALIFIED
by sadegh on Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:49 AM CDTIT WASN'T A QUALIFIED CONDEMNATION...THE DOCUMENTARY HANDLES A SPECIFIC SUBJECT MATTER - DIVORCE - SO THE AREA UNDER EXAMINATION IS LIMITED...IT'S VERY SIMPLE MY DEAR...

Hard to please
by Fred on Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:32 AM CDTWhen it comes to violating the human rights by the Islamist republic there is no need to split hair, it is a blanket violation. The way presented here, intended or not, it leaves the impression, that in other “regards” situation is different which would be a misrepresentation of reality. Islamist/Anti-Semites and their likeminded lefty allies including lovey-dovey sidekicks don’t take qualified complements easily.
unbelievable
by Mehdi-Palang on Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:14 AM CDTlol, I agree with you 100% Sadegh jan. This guy hasn't liked your views on your past blogs, so he's desperately trying to argue with you on something that you both agree on.
Fred, how old are you? Do you thrive on conflict? Why do you comment in such a reactionary manner? Come on, you're better than that.
This is a very good video, thanks for posting.
Well done genius - I WAS
by sadegh on Wed Jul 16, 2008 10:58 AM CDTWell done genius - I WAS REFERRING TO THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THE DOCUMENTARY WHICH IS ABOUT THE NATURE OF DIVORCE IN IRAN AND NOT ABOUT THE OPPRESSION OF WOMEN IN GENERAL OR GENDER APARTHEID OR WHATEVER - ALL OF WHICH I REPUDIATE UNEQUIVOCALLY - ARE YOU THAT DESPERATE IN YOUR ONE UPMANSHIP THAT YOU'LL EVEN CREATE FALSE DIVERGENCES WHEN IN FACT WE'RE IN COMPLETE AGREEMENT...What an ass...

Doing the right thing
by Fred on Wed Jul 16, 2008 10:25 AM CDTWhen doing the right thing, it is worth doing it right. You say: “Divorce Iranian Style covers the heinous state of women's rights in the matter of divorce under the Islamic republic. We are all aware of the woefully inadequate state of women's rights in this regard.” Actually there is no specific matter or regard where women’s rights are not trampled on in the Islamist republic; it is a blanket disregard of their rights as human beings, parsing and splitting it is a disservice to them who are forced to live with this brutality every moment of their lives.
