Obviously Sarah Palin cheered up and excited the core and base of the Republican Party. But what the leaders of the party have realized and understand that the far right operatives (like Rush Limbaugh and others) fail to register is 2 things:
1- The GOP needs to work on appealing to the main stream America. They need to attract the independent voters, the middle America, those who came out and made a difference by siding with Barack Obama! Recycling the same radical, unpleasant and vicious slogans that were heard in Sarah Palin rallies during the '08 campaign will produce the same results as in November of 2008!
Other words, at this point in time, the GOP needs to get as far away from the Rush Limbaugh politics as possible!
2- Sarah Palin is folksy and nice looking. And she does have some appeal! But she is majorly under-read, unworldly and unprepared for national and international politics. Sara Palin needs to go to school for a solid 2-3 years and study all the basics from scratch (and I mean full time; 8 hour days!) Unless she does that, she will be no match for her rivals even in her own GOP party primaries, and certainly not prepared to face a Barack Obama who will by then have 4 years of Presidency under his belt in addition to what he has already demonstrated!
Just imagine a debate between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin today! Now add for years of Obama presidency experience and worldly input to that scenario!
The bottom line is that Sarah Palin could return to national politics but she has a loooong way to get there!
GOP's enthiusiasm about Palin is misplaced (for the near future)
