Balance required in Iran relations

Dealing with Iran requires a delicate balance, especially for the countries of the Gulf. Extreme positions should be avoided by all parties concerned to ensure peace.

The UAE has consistently adopted a policy that strikes a balance between its foreign policy requirements and international demands.

"I think it is extremely important to have that balance right, between our international commitments on the one hand and also between the fact that a lot of the transactions that we do have are legitimate," said Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, in a statement. The comment came following discussions with senior US officials on the topic.

This position is not to be misunderstood as one that is out of sync with the international position on Iran's nuclear programme. Iran should comply by being completely transparent and forthcoming about its controversial programme.
