Afshan Karimi
July 24, 2008 (METRO VANCOUVER): UPDATE: Afshan Karimi, an recent immigrant from Iran has been found. Burnaby RCMP released a brief statement Thursday saying:
"The Burnaby RCMP wish to thank everyone for their assistance in locating KAMIRI. Investigators have spoken with the female and the circumstances behind her missing status are now a family matter."
She went missing Tuesday (July 21).
Original story:
A Burnaby man is asking for help to locate his wife, who was last seen Monday morning at the McGill library.
Amir Shoolestani said his wife walked to the Albert Street library on July 21 at about 9:30 a.m. A recent immigrant from Iran, 26-year-old Afshan Karimi was trying to improve her English skills and went to the library for a quiet place to learn the language.
"She wanted to study because she barely speaks English," said Shoolestani, adding that Karimi didn't go to the library often.
"She might have gone to the Burnaby Heights trail. She would've come home."
Karimi was last seen leaving the library at 11:40 a.m. Shoolestani thought she would walk back home. When she didn't return by the afternoon, he went to the library to look for her. Not finding her, he called RCMP to report her missing.
Karimi is five-foot-four and 165 pounds with brown hair in a ponytail. She was wearing a short-sleeved dark navy blue polo shirt with Team Falcon written on the front. She had on black pants and running shoes with red and black laces, and she was carrying a large black purse.
She has no history of going missing and does not have any other friends or family in the area.
Anyone with information is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.

Marriage Fraud
by Golsokhan (not verified) on Thu Aug 14, 2008 09:52 PM PDTIs it really an abuse!? The husband takes his wife to the library to study English at a quite place and when she doesn't come home, the husband worries about her so much that he reports her wife as a missing person to the police and the media to find her! I wish I had such a husband! I have read these stories before, it looks like a marriage fraud to me. After two days of search, the police finds her safe and secure at a friend house having a good time :) Stories like these are common in Canada. People get married just to move to another country, and after they get their residency cards, they vanish and leave their spouses in shock. You can find fascinating stories like this here (some are Iranians): http://stopmarriagefraud.ca/victims.html

What is being cheered is the fact that this woman didn't end up as yet another statistic in this North American continent of people going missing and never being found alive again.
