Four wives, one man

Documentary in Los Angeles Film Festival, June 2008

"My son is a good man ... at sleeping with his wives!" cracks Heda's aged mother, who harbors no illusions about her son. In Iran, polygamy isn't illegal, but it is proving to be irritating to Heda's four wives, who have to deal with a husband whose solution to marital discord is to bring home another bride. Nahid Persson's outrageous three-year portrait of this outspoken family is funny and infuriating, observing the women as they bicker among themselves, yet also support one another — and their 20 children.

How open minded are you about a woman and two husbands?
Works for you?

It usually works fine

by Alborzi (not verified) on

The concepts in Islam some times appear barbaric but in fact they work fine. For example the coept of mehrieh or sigheh at first glance appear very back wards but in fact its very much like a prenuptial agreement and sigheh allows the practice that is common in west to be conducted with some precautions and no guilt. Anyway my grand father had two wives. The first wife was had when they were both 12, by the time they were 45 the second wife was a savior for the marriage. The two wives were best friends. Today my uncle (who was from second wife) is younger than me. If you have an open mind you see the beauty of it and its practicality, think you always have like for cups per tea pot, now that is the all over the world and it has nothing to do with Islam. Just open (your mind).

You leave in hypocritical socities

by AnonymBemoon (not verified) on

In Iran and West men have sex with different women, with an exception that in West everything is kept hidden. One of the US politicians hobbies is, for example, to have extra-conjugale relationships. In holland, married men choose their whores as they choose chips in groceries. In Austria, a father has violated his daughter more than 20 years by keeping her his prisonner, ...

And you bikar people here, just do care that in a somewhere village in Iran a man has 4 married wives?

ASDF, to que hichi as hichi nemidooni khaheshmikonam boro kenar bezar bad biad. In France SDF stands for Sans Domicile Fixe (homless) You ASDF are an American Sans Domicile Fixe, that's so right, na?

I will defend this set up

by shirazie (not verified) on

If you grow up in rural villages, you will understand this arrangement.

Multi marriages were done in rural villages for these reasons

1. Economic
2. Shortage of men
3. Younger wives took care of older couples

Older and better off villagers and their elder wives would agree on bring on another wife as a nurse.

One Doctor married 4 women in 4 different villages. he was a traveling Doctor. The one and only one in Central fars in 1950's and 1960's.

He would face families in despair. The man of the house would have died and no one to take care of the poor family.

He step in and took care these families. What amazed me was the great bond that developed among these four families.

BUT I think - in this case , goat herder is a sex addict , just listen to his mom

The legal age of marriage for girls in Iran is 9 according to Sharia. If this is not pedophilia, I don't know what is?

Khomeini Brought Down the Age of Marriage from 18 to 9 years old!!

Iran's prison are full of women who were children at the time of their marriage and when they grew up, they killed their husbands. Most of these husbands are physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive toward their young wives.

Here is a report:

"Shahla Moazami, a criminologist in Iran, performed a conclusive research in 2003 on the topic of “spouse-killings”. These were her findings:

“From her interviews, Moazami found a clear and common pattern in the stories of the female killers. The women married young, often 12-14 years old, and they had from 5 to 7 children. At the time of the murder their average age was 29 years old. Many of them tell that their husband had lost interest in them, and they felt that their beauty was fading.

When a new man takes an interest in them, they fall easily for him. The law gives women few possibilities to get a divorce, and the murder of the husband is planned and done together with the new boyfriend. Only 33% of the women did the killing on their own. Moazami also found cases where women, sometimes with the assistance of their daughters, killed a violent husband.

Moazami thinks there are several structural causes to spouse killing. She mentions poverty, illiteracy, traditional opinions and Iranian women’s position in marriage and society. Young marriage age is also important. Moazami thinks that the women were too young to understand marriage when they married at 12-14 years old, and it was difficult for them make their own demands.” Source: Norwegian Information and Documentation Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research.

Let’s tackle the first issue: marrying young. Who decides for a girl to marry young in the first place? Every one knows in traditionally male-dominated households, nothing takes place without the Father’s permission. So, the answer is a “Male”.Who decides for women’s divorce? A male judge based on religious and patriarchal interpretations of family laws.In 67% of the cases, who carries out the murder? A male lover.Since illiteracy is indicated as one of the cultural triggers to spousal killing, in a traditionally male-dominated society, who decides when and why and how a young girl should go to school or if she needs to go to school at all? The Father; or any other empowered Male figure.
Isn’t it crucially striking that the Father, the Judge, the Killer, and the Murder Victim are all Males?

Of course, this is not to condone any form of killing! (as some of the opponents may love to conclude by reading this article); this is only to delineate the fact that male-domination is the first and foremost enemy of itself; patriarchy is its own foe. An insightful male effortlessly knows that holding an ax above a woman’s head ought to be a suicidal act; a will to self-mutilation.

Understand that the male psyche can not subsist without its female half-core; a stifled female Always means a Defeated Male. A Defeated Male means the endangered world we live in now."

Luciferous

by Iranian Mother (not verified) on

Not as rare as you would like it to be my dear! Yes, maybe men who live with all their additional wives in the same house are rare, but rest assured that many Iranian men are actively participating in bigamy and polygamy. They do it because they can, simple as that. The law allows it, the society tolerates it, and the women who become second and third wives and concubines (sigheh) don't care so long as their financial demands are met.

I have seen university professors and highly educated men and successful businessmen do it. I have seen men with married children and grandchildren do it to their wives of 35 years. I have seen at least 2 Iranian-Americans who went to Iran to "take care of business and inheritence," and ended up marrying an (additional!) younger woman.

I saw one man who told his wife of 28 years: If you don't like it you can leave, I can be married to a 25-year old woman next week, so don't push it (roo-to ziyad nakon).

What about this do you think is defamatory? Iranian men think they have hit the jackpot with Islamic laws in Iran. They take advantage of every nook and cranny of this vile and savage law to undermine the Iranian women's rights, trust me. The ironic thing is that even men who don't commit bigamy or polygamy, even men who don't exercise their overt rights under the Iranian laws, are always mindful and aware of those rights and expect special respect and recognition from their wives for not exercising those rights!

What they don't know is that when half of a society is degraded, the other half will decay, too. It will take years after the mullahs are gone for our nation to heal and to put things back where they belong. Iranian men are a little diseased right now.

Four wives, one man

by Faribors maleknasri M.D. (not verified) on

marrying a second, third and a forth wives are only under certain circumstances allowed. The fundamental condition is: marryage must have one and only one SOCIAL base. For example when the first wife is thick or the man is thick and the first wife can not manage the daily life of the family. In the actual case IS the first wife healthier than the following brides. The forth wife seems to be young, but up to my oppinion the marriage has a very socvial base. he has based a clan. All 5 and the small son work. They have a lot of weat and a good number of sheeps and goats an so on. They look lucky. they are communicative. The grand ma is not far away from her alzheimer. Every thing is allright with the family AND with "IRANIAN"s who have a need to write, to talk and to make videos where they can help their hate against honorable Iranian Nation. Greeting

Why putting spotlight on a rare phenomenon?

by Luciferous (not verified) on

to defame, to deny and to slander Iran, Iranians, Iranian`s culture, Religion and so on. But all these are only means to an end. Iranians should open doors and windows for rubbers and thieves. The most last iranian shah - aller letzter Perser kaiser - had this assignment from his bosses for his Homeland. Now "IRANIAN" continues to finish the job. Think on the "jokes" about Iranian raket-tests. By the way: Why do you ask?

Sorry for my STUPIDITY. I should have explained these terms for non- Farsi speakers.

Here they ar:

SineZany (It means beating your bare chest with palms of your hands very hard during some religious ceremonies)

Bache Bazy (It means pedophilia. But usually it is between an older man and young boy)

Sang Sary (stoning somebody for the crimes they have committed – usually adultery)

Ghameh Zany (hitting the head with a sharp device, like machete to bleed. Sometimes, parents do that to their young kid. I HAVE SEEN THIS about 20 years ago)

Please give definitions....

by Magen30 (not verified) on

To: "Against Stupidity" - or anyone who can give a good definition to the following phrases. I am not from the middle east nor from a Muslim background so if you would offer a definition of the phrases below, I would be most appreciative.

1) Ploygamy - (Polygamy- married to more than 1 wife at a time)

2) Sinezany -?? Never heard of it.

3) Ghamehzany - ?? Never heard of it.

4) Bacheh Bazy - ?? Never heard of it.

5) Under-aged marriage to girls sometimes younger than 15 [OK I understand this one because perverts & pedophiles have always existed in all places.]

6) Honor killing - if a girls "virtue" is of question, (weather there is a valid objection with evidence doesn't matter) her family redeems their family honor only in her death.... right??

7) Sang-Sary?? - Never heard of it..

8) Gay killing (OK, I understand this one.... however, I understand that homosexuality/gay has different definition in Islamic/Iranian/mid east culture than what most westerners understand. I have "heard" pederasty is often not as objectionable as homosexuality. Any brief insight you can give would be helpful.)

9) Racism (yes racism) - OK, I understand this one clearly.

10) etc.

I agree with "I Don't Know Why" by Against Stupidity
on Mon Jul 14, 2008 09:36 PM CDT - shame on any culture, society, religion, religious leader, gov't or anyone who can look the other way when pedophilia or 'child brides' or polygamy or honor killings.... are practiced & ignored. That's like trying to ignore an elephant in your house. To deny it only makes others believe you are either crazy or are practicing such behavior. Such practices warrant a clear position of either I vehemently object & renounce the practice & are against anyone involved in the practice or..... you are involved or protect those involved in such behavior. There cannot be any straddling the fence on such issues.

Why putting spotlight on a rare phenomenon?

by vahid on

I am appalled by the short-sightedness of Madam Perrson. It's outrageous to display this rare social trend as being a norm in Iran. This documentray-maker, instead of attemting to familiarise the West with our culture, should definitely bolster her knowledge of the Iranian Culture. While polygamy is permitted by the law in Iran , it's widely deprecated and frowned upon even in most remote villages of Iran today. She would have been better off concentrating on the struggle of women for equal rights, and their battle in other realms rather than wasting her time on a subject that is anathema to the current reality in Iran.

Madam Perrson, you should have shot your documentary in Saudi Arabia, or even in Iraq, where poligamy is a socially accepted norm. However, don't label Iranian culture with this rare subject.

I don't know why

by Against Stupidity (not verified) on

I don't why some folks get so upset, whenever some truth are told about their culture. You like it or not, the followings are some examples that have roots in Iranian culture

1) Ploygamy
2) Sinezany
3) Ghamehzany
4) Bacheh Bazy
5) Under-aged marriage (girls sometimes younger than 15)

6) Honor killing
7) Sang-Sary
8) Gay killing
9) Racism (yes racism)
10) etc.

If you believe these are not OK, then expose them and educate others. Don't hide them.

and NO, I am not defending the west. There are stupidities in the west too.

Now is a happy man and 4women! Ms. Persson, What's your pooint?

by gol-dust on

You mistranslated to mislead the westerners. Why? Didn't she say that he is good man? why did you translate it wrongly to only prove your point? You fooled that old woman to say the word Pussy so you could diminish her and us! I have never heard a woman ever saying that! This was the first! yet you portray it as a common thing. What the hell doing in that house anyway? was one or more of those wives your sisters?

Persson? what kind of a name is that? are you iranian? what is your agenda? You live in the west with a western name and make fun of these people who you don't know anything about! As much as I don't care for it, but who are you to demonize them? I bet all those women are happier than you! I am from tehran but I have lived among the people from the villages, those people know what they are getting into and they are not forced to. They don't have yours and my mentallity. What is important to know, that it is a rare event in Iran, but accepted. I'd rather see that than all those cheaters!

I travel extensively too.

by proftalla (not verified) on

I travel extensively too. Having 4 wives might not be the norm but adultery and infidelity among Iranian men is more than a norm and almost accepted by the poor wives. The wives don't say anything although they know they are being cheated on...divorce is not an option for an Iranian woman. Once your virginity is gone, you're worthless as a woman in Iran.

This is NOT a norm . . .

by Mohammad Ala on

I travel extensively throughout Iran.  I have NOT met an Iranian man who has two wives let alone four (wives).  Nomads (asha-yer) might marry more than one wife.

A friend from Sweden wrote to mention that Mrs. Nahid Persson makes documentaries about negative aspects of Iranian lives.  Is she after publicity?

The majority of nationalities talk positively about their race, culture, etc.

Why have not we seen a documentary about Iranian girls working very hard to pass national exam (konkor)?

I have no problem to show the negative aspect of our lives, but one must not take an exception and generalize it.

I have a question: How about infidelity in Sweden or Western countries?
