I was in Orlando last week recording a few songs on the outskirts of the city. Driving down Route 4 near Deltona I looked up and I saw a group of maybe 4 “white, obese and oldish” men with a banner saying “Impeach Obama”. This was like Wednesday morning at 10:30 am. I mean mid-morning, mid-week and these guys had nothing better to do than to hold up a sign like that…. For what? To get some drivers to honk if they agree?? Does this really have meaning or impact?
Then this week, I was driving from Cincinatti to Lexington, scouting locations for a film and again I looked up on the Kentucky side, and there were a bunch maybe a dozen or so “white, obese, but this time mixed age and sex” group holding a large yellow banner saying “Impeach Obama”.
But this time, I drove to the next exit, turned back and got close to the overpass, parked my car and walked towards them (with my camera) – I very gently approached one of them on the periphery – and asked, “why should Obama be impeached?”
She goes on to say: “well he’s taking away our rights.”
“Oh” I said, “what rights are you talking about?”
“Well guns for one – he’s taking away our guns. And free speech, he spying on us and wants to shut us up.”
“Oh”, I said.
“And, look at the economy, he’s destroyed our economy. Look at gas prices – it’s almost $4 now”.
I saw a few of the men in the center start walking towards me, so I took a quick photo and bolted off.
I could have argued for hours. Where the hell were these people when average gas prices hit $4.12 in May 2008 (yes while George Bush was in charge)? And how is it that the Dow Jones Index on New York stock exchange has just hit historical highs? By the way, US gas pump prices are averaging $3.55 nationally, and hasn’t peaked beyond $3.84 (average) nationally. And Kentucky for sure, has one of the lowest Gas prices in the U.S. (By the way BP is the largest gasoline retailer in Kentucky…if they are unhappy with Gas prices …maybe they should go after BP)!?
And is Obama the only politician to speak about some gun controls in America? If anything, this issue has heightened after the school shootings. The administration has to respond.
I think it’s a complete waste of time trying to reason with these nuts. Isn’t it?
So I continued south on I75 towards southern Kentucky – and put my radio on scan …the further south I went, the more country and religious stations blared out. I actually stopped it at a few of the country stations and heard some really cool country songs I hadn’t heard before.
I stayed the night at the Renfro entertainment center, and decided to go to a barn dance at the old barn …to hear some good, southern music. The concert was great, except right at the end, they brought down a huge U.S. flag and sang a song called “God Bless America – Again”. And the lyric went something like – the country’s gone astray and we need the country to be blessed again. It was a very direct swipe at Obama.
Sunday morning, and I am driving back to the airport. 11am …I accidentally hit a Christian station. Now remember this is SUNDAY morning, peak listening time. The preacher goes on to say that when Obama made a speech about how Israel needs to go back to the ’67 borders to find peace …”God punished America by sending a tornado to Joplin Mississippi – causing 100 deaths – the next day”.
Yes, I swear to God. I swear on my mother life … yes, I heard that. Forget the fact that it was the third tornado to hit Joplin in so many years …and that it was during the traditionally heavy May months when Tornado are very likely in that whole region…just forget that.
Interestingly, members of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church were scheduled to protest the same day in Joplin, but they did not show up. There was a massive counter protest that was organized in response to the Westboro protest, in which thousands of protesters showed up holding signs saying, "God Loves Joplin" and "We Support You Joplin
No, according to this preacher, it was all due the speech made by Obama the day before in Europe.
He then went on to say, that Hurricane Katrina was God’s way of punishing America for asking Israel to evacuate its settlements near the Gaza. Wasn’t it strange, he asked, that “Katrina hit the U.S. 2 days after Israel vacated those settlements?”
Yes, I think, strange indeed. Very strange. Isn’t it true that Katrina was a Category 1 hurricane on August 23rd. 2005? And as it crossed Florida and eventually gained strength passing over a very hot Mexican Gulf (hotter on average in recent years due to global warming – but try telling that to this idiot preacher) and become a Hurricane Category 3 by August 29th?
And if this idiot preacher, had gone to New Orleans, (and yes, I was there last month) and had taken the time to ask the cab driver to simply describe where the floods happened and why (it’s an easy question to ask because there was major flooding along the highway from the airport to downtown). This idiot preacher would learn that what caused the flooding was the breaking of the levies – substandard U.S. army built levies – that had already developed cracks and known defects he would have realized that it wasn’t the Hurricane directly that cause the flooding - Hurricane Katrina simply brought up the water level in the Mouth of the Mississippi (which Hurricanes generally do everywhere they hit). Maybe he should be asking the listeners to pray for great workmanship by the U.S. army. This is the “The greatest army ever in history” according to General Abizaid, retired commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, then Iraq and later Centcom – that nearly bankrupted the U.S. with over $3 Trillion in wasteful expenditure in Iraq – with Billions of dollars in false (all cash) pay to non-existent names on its payroll and transportation contracts with Taliban and drug lords (but does this preacher care)?
Does this preacher even care that the scale of corruption by Bush and his cronies during his time in the Whitehouse was on a scale unprecedented in the world? I mean there’s more money in Swiss and Cayman Island bank accounts from these war contracts than the GDP of the most corrupt countries in the world combined – like Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria ...
And yes, one morning this week, in Bluegrass Country, I could not sleep so I drifted out for a walk early (6am), I went to a coffee shop early only to find myself among a bunch of men having their Bible Breakfast meeting there. But as an Iranian, who am I to talk – when you can see Mullahs in tea houses early in the Morning. And people praying in groups early all over Iran.
This, my friends is the underbelly of the United States. You can see that the Republicans and their Israeli allies are spending heavily here to simply turn these ignorant people into mad morons. If they succeed and this movement gets legs …and remember I started this blog by saying I first saw these morons in Florida …then the U.S. is in for something far worse than the theocracy we have witnessed in Iran.
And, to my few dear Israeli friends (who I really value and cherish, as I do my other friends …from other nations) – I have one piece of advice. Having these morons preach your message is very dangerous. It will backfire on Israel.
All these morons have to do is to look around them and realize that 75% of America’s wealth is in the hands of its 2% Israeli-American (yes almost all Jews in U.S. have double citizenship) residents. When they finally figure that out, these same idiots will put Hitler to shame. Israelis need to listen very carefully to the message the KKK has been espousing for decades (long before 9/11) and ask themselves if these same morons can be swayed in a completely different direction? If they cannot reason - which apparently they can’t; if they cannot appreciate simple facts – which apparently they can’t – this means they can be swayed – right? And believe me, regardless what this preacher preaches for the few shekels Israelis have thrown at him, at their very core their hatred for Muslims is second to their hatred of Jews. If they can go after one group, they will surely go after another one too. Remember Hitler went after many other groups before he picked on Jews.
And to the Republicans for God’s sake – absorb some sanity. You’re completely off your rockers. The Republican Party is now the party of hatred and theocracy – just like the regime in Iran. Any constructive ideas?
