(From two sources). The base is Khalkhaleh Military Airport in Sweida province. The FSA is alllegedly advancing there from the direction of Lajat in Daraa Province. The defections came after rebels destroyed a convoy there and destroyed many soldiers. Reading the report below from Reuther I wonder if the convoy was loaded with loyalists who were supposed to confine Sunni troops but got sidetracked into death.
Reuthers reports that thousands of regime forces, mostly Sunnis, have been disarmed and shipped to likely military targets, especially baracks and air bases. Damascus civilians complain that armed soldiers are being stationed the basements of large apartment buildings where they sing songs praising Assad.
As I've noted before, the regime so beloved by GOP presidential candidate Rand Paul has reportedly been stationing artillery pieces on the rooftops of some of these buildings. Would a regime capable of bombing breadlines and crops and gassing women and children hesitate to use human shields, including some of its own troops who belonged to the wrong branch of Islam?.
Here's a link to the Reuthers report:
If I were in Obama's shoes and wanted to score certain hits without risking human shields I'd go after some of the surrounded sites that are in no position to import hman shields. Examples: the brick factory in Idlib, several airbases in the north, holdout units in Raqqa, etc.
HOMS AREA GETS A TASTE OF TALIBAN LIFESTYLE
Al Queda-linked ISIS reportedly executed a woman and two men for adultery, which is no crime in a normal country. Next they'll be hanging CDs and DVDs from trees as in Afghanistan.
ALEPPO: There is at least one report tonight suggesting the attack on the surrounded prison may have resumed.
TADMUR AIRBASE IN PALMYRA: Massive explosions are reported inside the Palmyra airbase at location shown below. Much of the base has reportedly been evacuated with 40 trucks loaded with men and equipment earlier. Having given up some of these airbases, I suspect the regime may not find it so easy to take them back. Are the planes being moved too? If so, where is safe? Airports in coastal areas will be no more immune to cruise missiles than those in Damascus and the north.
