It’s been a while, but in recent visits when reading posts related to Iran, I have noticed familiar tones despite the new wrapping. There is the diatribe about the war mongering West and then various arguments as to why the Rouhani/Obama series of events are good; and anyone opposing it is war mongering. I won’t commit the same mistake and repeat berbiage of the past few years as a counterpoint. I leave that for NIAC et al and massive IRR propaganda machinery to exercise until gone; by domestic or foreign elements, and Iranian expats that are neither. I have too much respect for anyone who spends time reading me, and too little patience for mental aerobics; hence, grace and gratitude.
I’m thankful for the wonderful Dr. C., a man of European descent and dean of the Eng. dept. who hardly knew me, but his meritocracy allowed me to compete and win the scholarship that supported me through graduate school. An amazing man of great humor and intellect and an oddity; an engineer with multiple patents that happened to be a practicing physician as well. His typically wry comments in and out of class took some deciphering before the hidden humor had one laughing out loud.
I am grateful to the school principal who responded to my lobbying and overlooked technicalities and allowed paperless 12 year old sister of my Nigerian friend (a recent immigrant on tourist visa) get into school. She graduated as valedictorian.
I am grateful to my Malay friend and colleague who helped fund my startup in the late 90's. A man of no religion that to this date I have yet to see a person with more grace and honor.
I despise Carter and BBC for spearheading a mindless and misguided policy and grand deception that was short sighted, ignorant and caused much pain around the world and for millions of Iranians.
I am grateful to America for giving me a place of peace and security without many strings attached.
I despise Islamism (not Moslems) founded as a tool of foreign policy by the U.S. and the West in North Africa of 1960’s whose bastard children have wreaked havoc on this planet for the past 30 years plus since ushering in of Reagan and 79 devolution. I despite the mindset that thinks subjugation to more sinister Russia and China against the U.S. somehow works better than pre-devolution subjugation Shah was supposedly guilty of.
I am grateful for a bipolar Soviet/USA world of post WWII to late 80’s that gave the world a cushion and allowed for relative peace and development.
I am grateful that Iran of pre-devolution allowed my generation to grow up in peace and normalcy and without the never ending finger pointing and hatred of everything that is not like me.
I despise Ali Shariati without whose magnificent deception and lies the ground for destruction of Iran could not become fertile enough for the weeds and parasites that have thrived and taken it over.
I’m grateful for my Chinese friend who makes the best darn stuffed turkey you can imagine and works himself to death despite my advice, and my Catalan buddy who makes the meanest Escalivada in the world but can’t keep a woman. I am yet to find a person that is good and decent because of their place of origin, or one that is evil because of it. Decency and honor are not geo-dependent.
I am grateful for Shahnameh, Nima Yushij, Farhad and Fereidoon’s (Foroughi and Farokhzaad) for holding a mirror to ourselves, Pahlavi’s who with all their flaws loved and built Iran, Golesorkhi for his deep love even if I oppose his views, and Mossadegh that with all his flaws served Iran, and Ahmad Ghavam that most leaders including Shah conspired against, Sadegh Hedayat who shed light on the cancer that would take Iran over years before it happened, for Tochal that was always fun to hike and to magnificent Khazar that provided the backdrop for a wonderful childhood; and to my father who introduced me to Daneshmand, Farming and America early on but did not live to keep me company when I miss him most.
I despise that we are assigning good and bad to East and West. That we think either side or a subset has a monopoly on good or bad. That we have become so magnificently comfortable talking from both sides of our mouths and standing for nothing. We blame the West for all that is wrong with this planet but have no issue living here, talking on iPhones and using Military spending, etc.. That we talk of war as though it is just Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, but not what is being done to the people of Iran by a rapist and racist group of Mortaje’, and to Syrians and Libyans and Egyptians by both sides of the spectrum. That we think Israel’s apartheid and anti-human policies somehow explain or justify what the rapist republic is doing to Iran and Iranians, and beyond with what Hamas is doing to the Palestinians, Hezbollah to Lebanon; or forget how a thieving murderous Yasser Arafat sold himself to whomever paid for it. Or for that matter what capitalism is doing to this planet and us on it. Two wrongs don’t make a right. All dominating powers since the dawn of history have proven capable of great evil. The corrupt republic is just raising the bar for how ruthless and dangerous a medium-level power can be when willing to sacrifice other people’s lives. As Lord Farquaad of Shrek fame said: thousands of you may die in this pursuit, but that is a price I’m willing to pay.
I am grateful that there are enough decent people from every creed, color and corner left in the world that think on their own and do not feel obliged to paint everything with a color that conveniently fits their décor, worldview and biases. Without it the world will be a more sorry place than it already is.
It was lies, deception and disgrace that brought Iran to where it is kneeling today. The smartest thing Iranians can do is to not be deceived yet again.
Let’s not advertise yet another grand deception as peace making by the IRR or USA. If we want peace, there is no room for Iran's corrupt government, the masterpiece production of global Capitalism. Right next to UAE and SA.
