New Voyager | President Rouhani | Director: Hossein Dehbashi

"Inspired by the "Yes We Can" video, this piece was produced by Hossein Dehbashi for the 100th day of the Government of Prudence and Hope, featuring Hassan Rouhani's first speech as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This video was an initiative taken by the artists (without the President's knowledge) to immortalize President Rouhani's emotional speech, where he expresses hope for peace, friendship and progress. Only at the later stages was the video shown to President Rouhani.

This melodic piece is the first time ever for a chorus to sing along with a formal speech by a prominent Shia cleric and high ranking Iranian politician. Featuring musical instruments on video and singing by women are prohibited by Iran's state television. The fact that President Rouhani's personal website decided to feature this video was a great and notable step to break this taboo and support Iranian artists.

To pay tribute and celebrate Iranians from all backgrounds, parts of the video are in Kurdish, Balochi, Azeri and Arabic."

Yes Iraj khan, I agree with you on this subject. Let's together chant loudly :
LONG LIVE PEACE, LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN 2 GREAT NATIONS OF IRAN AND ISRAEL

Yes, but as long as both countries (Iran and Israel) lack respect for human rights and systematically work to abuse and destroy those rights (one at home and the other with their neighbors) both regimes ought to be shunned by the international community, until they abide by the international rules in relation to human rights and de-occupation of the neighboring land.

Since you show much interest for the establishment of a peaceful resolution between Iran and Israel here is what an Israeli politician said about Iran since the election of Mr Rouhani by the Iranian people.

By Uri Avnery:

"Iran is the great victor. It has been warmly welcomed back into the family of civilized nations. Its currency, the rial, is jumping. Its prestige and influence in the region has become paramount. Its enemies in the Muslim world, Saudi Arabia and its gulf satellites, have been humiliated. Any military strike against it by anyone, including Israel, has become unthinkable.

The image of Iran as a nation of crazy ayatollahs, fostered by Netanyahu and Ahmadinejad, has disappeared. Iran now looks like a responsible country, led by sober and shrewd leaders.

Israel is the great loser. It has maneuvered itself into a position of total isolation. Its demands have been ignored, its traditional friends have distanced themselves. But above everything else, its relations with the US have been seriously damaged."

and still, Iranians do not have basic rights like freedom of press, freedom to associate, and freedom of speech. hypocrisy at its best.

Indeed. Do you (and others) feel that a rapprochement with the West can help (over time) ameliorate the country's human rights conditions? cc @Persa @Zendanian @siavash @ghourbagheh @MRX2412

Mr. Amin,

Iran, even in the darkest days of Iraq war had contacts and attempts for rapprochement with the West, several of such approaches including the Iran Gate and the recent negotiations were in secrecy. The problem with Iranian regime and its relationship with Iranians and the West is that it does not represent the true culture of Iranians, hence its friendship with the West will be more of a trade relationship and not cultural because inherently the regime rejects Western cultures. I think global relationship does not recognize the arbitrary borders that are drawn by the Americans and the Europeans. If a government is truly a representative of its people it can and will conduct good relationships with most democratic countries. Iranians must first have a chance for their first honest election in 6000 years before it can push forward. We never had a free election and in our entire history we never had an elected leader. This as I said before is simply Ali Baba and 40 Thieves of Tehran story and we have been the silent audience for the past decades.

ghourbagheh

My problem is the intrinsic assumptions of you comment. Even if you don't say it explicitly, you imply that the West has a better human rights conditions that Iran! What would "rapprochement with the West" have anything to do with human rights anywhere in the world???

Iran's human rights conditions will improve when Iranians change their government. And they will do that, when are given a chance on their own, not under Western sanctions, and not with or without a rapprochement with the Western hypocrites.

Most of US just got finished stuffing their bellies in a celebration of genocide. Western government are still following the same cruel policies towards the rest of the world that have ravaged the planet for several centuries. What human rights? Why is the West thought of as a model for human rights? Lets get that mentality out of ourselves, lets stop the Thanksgiving blood feast, the Columbus Day genocidal celebrations, lets call the West what it it, and at the same time talk about human rights in Iran SEPARATE from the Western barbarity. When anyone assumes or implies the West as a prerequisite for human rights, that's is a red flag. Western countries have no interest in human rights anywhere in the world.

Shirzadegan

I don't understand why you keep forgetting. Our problem is ruling criminal mullahs. We need to get rid of them. That is our first priority. Mullahs need to go back to mosques and cemeteries to read koran for dead people. That is what they have been trained for. They were NOT trained to be a politicians. That is very simple.

Zendanian

Zendanian An injury to one is an injury to all.

Of course any establishment of regular diplomatic relations between Iran and West is a plus for Iranian people, for the mere fact that Islamic Republic cannot exist in a regular, crisis free environment. It knows any normalization in international or national arena leads to its demise. There's something about violent theocracies that monopolize political power, which leaves them very vulnerable to the slightest reforms.

We should unconditionally support all diplomatic efforts to oppose war and sanctions.

At the same time we should have no illusions about Islamic Republic's poverty of ethics, morality and keeping their promises.
Not to mention the "lip singing".

SofiaM

SofiaM

Well the bigger issue is that I don't think there is room for Rapprochment with this regime. You simply cannot have an honest negotiation with a Regime hell-bent on ridding the world of the Western lifestyle. There would need to be a change in regime, and ideology, for the country's HR to be slowly, but surely, respected and protected.

Zendanian

Zendanian An injury to one is an injury to all.

It's a bit amusing how this unrefined excuse of "Reform" accuses the critics of Islamic Republic as "out of touch."

Starting from:

- Ayat Shaytan khomieni himself, promising everything to everybody, to

- Rafsanjani promising "reconstruction" and actually introducing mass poverty and destitution, to

- Khatemi promising 'dialogue of civilizations' but delivering Chain Murders and Saied Emami, repression of Students' protest of 1999, massacre of Khaton Abaad workers...

- Eight years of AN! Self explanatory.

- And now Rohany, aka Ferieydon joon! A simple question for you would be: have we seen a decline in executions, harassments and arrests or an increase? And why?

So, here we a have well documented track record of "lip singing" for the past 34 years, and yet, you insist on denying the historical facts.

Reading the comments below, I'm amazed to see how out of touch with Iranian society are the EU/US based Iranian diaspora, so wrapped in their myopic ideology, so defeated that they can only see the lines they drew in the sand 30 years ago! Well, I would caution you to be mindful that history might pass you by, if it already hasn't!

Shirzadegan

Siavash

So you see the "Mood of Iranians" clearly on this site.
It is similar to what Iranians are thinking inside Iran.
The only difference is : these people can express their opinions and others can't.

ghourbagheh

ghourbagheh

Not even close...most of those who comment on this site, are the fossils of a bygone era! Ironically, it's most likely due to the fact that Iranians in Iran are not allowed access to this site, due to IRI censorship.

You don't understand my point. As I have always advocated, I believe in a strategic solution to Iran's problems. The dogmatic "political" views of most of the comments on this site are not going to have any positive effects, and if anything, cause more harm. Criticize IRI harshly, we should all do that. It's our duty. But, let's get beyond the nonsense. Most comments here, the US/EU fossils' comments, only see turbans and suits! Turbans-bad! Suits-good!

Lets not forget a few facts. Obama in the first 24 hours of his presidency attended over a dozen prayer breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. His speech was nowhere as conciliatory as Ruhani's speech. Bush, Clinton, etc. were far worse than Obama. All have continued to kill and destroy around the world as their predecessors did. Iranians have suffered under vicious Western policies justified by the flimsiest excuses. And the US/EU Iranian fossils sing the praise of Western policy vis-a-vis Iran and Iranians. Out of touch is an understatement!

Shirzadegan

Siavash

"Iranians have suffered under vicious Western policies justified by the flimsiest excuses" ghourbagheh

The above statement is WRONG.The right statement is :

Iranians have suffered under vicious ruling criminal mullahs by Islamic excuses.

No westerner policies raped the virgin prison girls the night before their execution, but mullahs did.
No westerner policies lashed Iranians like animal in the public, but mullas did
No westerner policies stoned Iranians to death in public, but mullahs did.
No westerner policies issued FATWA to massacre Iranian political prisoners, but Mullahs did.
No westerner policies brought Arabs from Gaza and Lebanon to Iran to beaten up Iranians during demonstration, but Mullahs did.
NO westerner policies made 3 million Iranians like homeless around the world begging for visa from foreign country, but Mullahs did
No westerner policies enforced hejab on the heads of Iranian women, but Mullahs did.
.....
The list goes on.
All these people on this site have families and relatives inside Iran. These people share their feelings and their views with Iranians inside Iran on daily basis.
The outside community is extension of Iranian people inside Iran. No differences.
The mood of our society in the early 80's was pro khomaini and pro revolution. That mood has been changed during last 34 years. Good observer is the one who can feel and see the mood of our people. The mood of our nation for the time being is against ruling criminal mullahs, NOT pro mullahs.

During early days of 1979 Revolution in Iran, there were so many nostalgic music clips snatched, copied and stolen from South American countries such as Bolivia, Paraguay, Chili and Peru; then dubbed with patriotic lyrics in Persian and were fed to people and played round the clock by the radio and television all over Iran, giving the impression that Iran was being freed from centuries of despotism! Three months later it all became obvious that dark clouds of theocracy will be covering Iran and spreading to the rest of the Middle East during the next decades. Artistic and musical kleptomania is part of our culture and with many of the pirated themes truly not fitting into our national and cultural profile. Often it induces more of nausea rather than ecstasy of patriotism when it’s intended to praise the despot.

The music is soothing to ear
The message is warm to the heart and soul
The singer (Rohani/IRI) has a long track record of lip singing and plain shayad bazi

But I as a concern Iranian hope one day we stop these lip singing and play the real tune that is for the Iranian people.

Zendanian

Zendanian An injury to one is an injury to all.

Honestly couldn't watch more than first two minutes. All the promises of reconciliation & peace have turned out to be a renewed wave of executions, arrests and incarceration of protestors
This peaceful narrative of Rohani is only for international consumption.
It doesn't apply in Iran for Iranians. Every compromise for regime in international arena has been followed by more repression and violence inside Iran for Iranian people.
Less illusions about this character now, less pain in the future.

P.S. The cameo quotations by Ayat Shaytan Khomeini was really uplifting too!
