Living in downtown Seattle, arguably the coffee capital of the world, I often prefer working out of a cozy shop than going to the office. One of my favorite places to camp out for the day is Cherry Street Coffee on 5th Avenue, located in the heart of Belltown. Coincidentally, Cherry Street and its 9 cafes are Iranian owned! The hints of Iranian ownership in their cafes are subtle; like the Persian calligraphy found on the coffee mugs.
Last week, while walking by my local Cherry Street, I noticed a hard to miss window banner that read, “Good Luck Laila at the World Barista Championship”. Curious, I Googled “Barista Championship” and lo and behold, it turns out that the 2014 United States Barista World Champion is Cherry Street’s own Laila Ghambari! Making the win even sweeter is that Laila is the daughter of Iranian-born Ali Ghambari, the proud owner of Cherry Street Coffee House.
Congrats Laila, Ali Ghambari and the Cherry Street family!
