Happy 64th Birthday Bob Marley

The 1940 movie “The Grapes of Wrath,” based on the classic John Steinbeck novel, features this quote, spoken by the character Tom Joad:

“Wherever you can look – wherever there’s a fight, so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad. I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry and they know supper’s ready, and when the people are eatin’ the stuff they raise and livin’ in the houses they build – I’ll be there, too.”

Marley is something like that. His music was too broad to define him as a protest singer, but whenever there’s a protest, or a demonstration, or a relief concert, his music tends to show up, and his spirit seems to be present. Reportedly, Marley’s music was heard when the Berlin Wall fell, and around the time of the Tiananmen Square uprising, and during the recent pro-immigration rallies in the U.S. [Christopher John Farley]
