Iraqi Friend’s Perspective

This afternoon I had a an opportunity to speak with a friend who is an Iraqi immigrant to the US, about the consequences of the Us/Iraq war.  I asked “What is going on over there?” He told me this:

“My father is an Iraqi national and a contractor with the CIA.  He keeps me advised of events in Iraq.”  He said, “Most Iraqis are very happy that the US took out Saddam.  Saddam was a murdering butcher who would snuff out a person’s life for sneezing in his presence.”

I asked “Who is the Iraqi government today?”

He said, “For the most part, people who were part of the Saddam administration.”

I asked, “Are they happy that he is gone?”

He said, “Absolutely, they hated him but they were stuck under him.  Think of it like you would an extremely abusive employer.  You put up with it because you have no choice but I can assure you, when his neck was stretched his right hand men were jumping for joy.”

I said, “According to numbers I have heard approximately 1 million Iraqis lost there lives in the war.”

He said “It is closer to 3 million, the records are not correct.  Based upon internal sources we are estimating that 3 million people died.”

I said, “That is a Holocaust.”

He said, “Most Iraqis are seeing it as a necessary sacrifice to get this murdering thug out of office.’

I asked, “How will the history books in Iraq portray GW Bush in Iraq.”

He replied, “They are already calling him the ‘Great Liberator’.”

I said, “I am disappointed in him.”

He replied, “The majority of the people in Iraq are thrilled with him. He is their hero.”

I replied, “But he acts like he is cognitively deficient.”

He replied, “One man’s jack ass is another man’s genius.”

I thought I would toss it out for deliberation.  Will Bush be seen historically differently than he is today and will the years cloak the weaknesses of his administration?
