Nowruz Resolution to be Introduced in Congress

March 11, 2009, Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael M. Honda (CA-15th) plans to introduce a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives next week in observance of the Iranian New Year. The resolution will recognize the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz, express appreciation to Iranian Americans for their contributions to American society, and wish Iranian Americans and all those who celebrate the holiday a prosperous new year.

“Nowruz provides an opportunity to appreciate the contributions of Iranian Americans to our society. They have made noteworthy and lasting contributions in all sectors of American public life, including as government, military and law enforcement officials, and in the fields of medicine, engineering, and business,” said Honda. “I am proud to represent the many Iranian Americans in my Silicon Valley district, who continue to teach all of us about their rich cultural history.”

The Nowruz resolution is being introduced at the urging of PAAIA and is a part of its broader efforts to foster greater understanding of the Iranian culture and heritage as well as projecting an accurate image of the Iranian American community that truly reflects our values and achievements. The resolution will mark the first time that members of Congress have introduced a measure recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz. To date, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-14th) has agreed to sign on as an original cosponsor of the resolution, and a number of other Members of Congress have been approached to do the same.

Ask your Representative to sign-on as an original co-sponsor of the Nowruz Resolution.
