Kidnapped Iranian diplomats back home

Five Iranians, including three diplomats, who were kidnapped by the US troops in the northern Iraqi city of Arbil in 2007 have returned back to Tehran.

The Iranians arrived in the Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport on Sunday.

In January 2007, the US troops raided the Iranian consulate in the city and kidnapped 5 diplomats. Two diplomats were later released.

The Iranian diplomats were held in Iraq for 2.5 years without charge.

Two other Iranians kidnapped elsewhere in Iraq by the US occupation troops later joined the three diplomats in detention.
On Thursday, Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Kazami-Qomi announced that the US had handed the five Iranians to the government of the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
