US, UN asked to take over Iran camp in Iraq

PARIS — An Iranian opposition group is asking the international community to assume control of a camp housing its members outside Baghdad that was violently raided by Iraqi authorities last month.

Maryam Rajavi, who heads a group that includes the People’s Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, called on the United States to re-establish temporary control over Camp Ashraf until United Nations forces are set up there.

The July 29 raid left nine people dead and hundreds injured, according to the group. Iraqi authorities say they were trying to set up a police station inside the camp.
