Washington, 24 August (WashingtonTV)—Argentine Cabinet Chief Anibal Fernandez said on Monday that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s nominee for defense minister “should be arrested” for his alleged role in a deadly 1994 bombing in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people.
Fernandez was reacting to Iran’s summoning earlier today of Argentina’s charge d’affaires in Tehran, to protest criticism by Buenos Aires over the nomination of Ahmad Vahidi.
In 2007, the international police agency, Interpol, issued a warrant for Vahidi’s arrest, and the arrest of four other Iranians, in connection with the attack on the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires.
Fernandez told reporters that the “red notice” on Vahidi approved by Interpol’s general assembly makes his arrest “mandatory in any country”, reports AFP.
According to Interpol’s website, a “red notice” is a request to national police forces to identify or locate suspects, with a view to arrest and extradition.
Argentine prosecutors accuse Iran of masterminding the attack and ordering the Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, to carry it out, reports AFP.
