“Women without Men”, which is also running in the competition, is the first cinema feature to be made by video artist Shirin Neshat. Her film is set in Teheran in 1953 and tells the story of four women who find themselves at a turning point in their lives. Meanwhile, everything is happening at once politically; the prime minister is overthrown by the CIA-orchestrated coup and the Shah returns from exile. The leading roles in the European coproduction produced by Essential Filmproduktion are played by Pegah Ferydoni, Orsi Toth, Arita Sharzad and Shabnam Tolouei
