In the United States, most people do not know the origin of basic food. The agribusiness conglomerates fought to stop food labelling for many years, especially country of origin labelling for produce (yes some countries use toxic chemicals (DDT anyone?) to give us those out of season fruits). When you go to buy your plants for Meatless Monday, read the labels carefully.
When you do decide to opt for meat, go for grass-fed. Or do a grass-fed Monday. A small change can really add up and decrease your risk to food poisoning.
Beef is one of those foods that typically comes from sketchy locations. We have a handful of factory producers of beef. The animals are treated like the stuff they expel. They are fed a corn diet primarly, which is terrible for many reasons, the main of which is that cows are herbivores. If you can, buy grass-fed beef. Also, most beef is washed in ammonia because of the constant outbreaks of deadly E. Coli. These cows live in their excrement from birth to (inhumane) slaughter. If you buy from places like Whole Foods, you know why you pay more. You are buying from farmers who are not government subsidized. You’re paying for cleaner, safer, and more humane meat.
Meatless Mondays is an idea that isn’t borne out of vegetarianism. It’s meant to help people discover the importance of plants in the human diet. Nutrients in plants are very helpful in combatting and preventing chronic diseases. Try it once a week and feel the difference.
