KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) — Iran’s Saimand Rahman broke two
world records in the men’s under 100kg category but had to settle for a
silver medal on the last day of the International Paralympic Committee
(IPC) Powerlifting Championships at the Titiwangsa Stadium, here Friday.

Saimand said after his third attempt, he made a special request for a
fourth attempt and managed to clear 285kg which broke the world record.

“But in the competition, they only take into account three attempts, so
I got the silver since I am heavier than Kazem,” he said.

The 285kg weight cleared by Saimand in the fourth attempt, was 20kg
more than the previous world record set by his compatriot Kazem Rajabi
Golojeh during the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

Saimand also broke the world junior record of 157.50kg set by
Anastasios Baos from South Africa in the 1992 IPC in Kuala Lumpur.

He had earlier lifted 265kg in his third attempt, the same weight
cleared by Kazem, but their body weight difference favoured the latter
who was awarded the gold.

Saimand’s body weight was 156.15kg while Kazem weighed 147.60kg.
