Dutch parliament wants to bring lawsuit against Iran

Parliament has adopted a motion asking the cabinet to investigate whether it is possible to file a lawsuit against Iran with the International Court of Justice. As a UN member state, Iran is automatically party to the Court’s statute.

The move was motivated by Iran’s decision to refuse the Dutch embassy in Iran permission to provide assistance to Dutch citizens also holding Iranian nationality.

The cabinet is also to investigate whether a lawsuit can be brought on behalf of Dutch-Iranian human rights activist Abdullah al-Mansouri who was convicted in Iran but was refused Dutch consular assistance.

Parliament also adopted a motion asking the government to investigate whether the recent slew of executions in Iran can be submitted the UN Human Rights Council as well as presented to the International Court of Justice.
