Iran opposition leaders to stand trial for sedition

Iranian opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi will stand trial for sedition, according to a report by Iran‘s semi-official Fars News Agency.

“The judiciary will definitely fulfill its duty with regard to the trial of Mousavi and Karroubi,” Hojjatoleslam Ali Razini, deputy chief of the judiciary for Legal and Judicial Development, was quoted as saying.

“People should know that the judiciary will not ignore its duty with regard to the trial of sedition masterminds and will try them in due time.”

Mr. Mousavi and his wife were reported missing on Thursday. He is the former Iranian prime minister who ran against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran‘s 2009 election and is widely believed to have won the contest.

Iranian demonstrators returned to the streets on Monday for the first time in more than a year, after Messrs. Mousavi and Karroubi called for a rally in solidarity with the Egyptian and Tunisian uprisings.

This week, 222 of 290 Iranian members of parliament signed a statement calling for the two “Green Movement” leaders to be prosecuted, while some lawmakers chanted “Death to Mousavi! Death to Karroubi!” in the chamber.
