Despite sweltering summer temperatures, residents of Iran’s capital city are not allowed to wear shorts or other western-style clothing that the government says are immodest.
The Iranian government has deployed more than 70,000 so-called “moral police” officers in the capital Tehran.
Women will be arrested if their headscarves do not fully cover their hair or their clothes show their figures too clearly. Men will be stopped for wearing necklaces or having hairstyles seen as inappropriate.
The enforcement is not limited to pedestrians seen in public. Drivers who are improperly dressed face arrest or their cars confiscated for a week. They are also not allowed to listen to loud music.
