Questions, what am I missing on this?

I have a question that I want to find some answers to. How come religious nations are mostly so cruel, wicked and utterly corrupt?

Surely Religion was intended to lead people toward creating greater tolerance and harmony, no?  Based on my travels and meeting all the people I have met, it seems goodness, beauty and truth does not come from religious values necessarily.  The written words of god seem to have the opposite effect.

The idea of pursuing prosperity with harm to none.  Loving people instead of controlling them.  It seems religious nations don’t honor these values in practice.  In Religous nations the people equate freedom to weapons and military technology, nukes, rather than the ideals and values of the individual leaders that command them.

Religous nations seem to breed a more materialistic society in practice than people living in service to love, truth or peace.  Religous countries like Iran & America for example, appear to be rotting from the inside, the people are becoming disingenuous, back stabbing, bullying.  The politics is a disaster, no decency there.

And the people are under so much stress and hardship unable to even keep a home or have health care or eat 3 meals a day.  I don’t see the word of god as having a good effect, the mullahs, priests, rabbis etc are often the worst criminals, snake oil salesmen.  Is it because religion is based on fear & control? I just don’t get it
