Iran says ready to pursue rescue aid calls for US storm

TEHRAN (ISNA)-Iran said is ready to examine and pursue demands for rescue aid to Central and North American countries hit by the recent Tropical Storm Irene.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the country is prepared to study and follow up on rescue aid demands to the countries.

He also expressed sympathy with families of victims of the storm.

“Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) is ready to examine and pursue calls of the crisis-hit American countries for aid quickly.”

The eye of Irene — downgraded from a hurricane but still blasting up to 65-mile-an-hour (105-kilometre-an-hour) winds and near horizontal rain — passed over the Big Apple on Sunday morning, causing flooding and power outages.

Localised flooding occurred in the south and east of Manhattan, with more serious incidents in Brooklyn. There was also heavy flooding along the low-lying south shore of Long Island.

Public transportation services were suspended, and it was not clear when train, subway and full bus services would be restored.
