The composer James L. Hosay has written a piece inspired by Persian history which is unknown to many Persians!
PERSIS (originally Greek for Persia, or Iran) was written in 1997 for wind orchestra. The composer calls PERSIS the most successful work of his career. “I did a great deal of research on ancient Persia and ancient Persian music theory before writing the work.” James says, “I wanted the Persian elements of the work to be as authentic as possible.”
The piece has been performed by various wind orchestras around the world, from Japan to the United States. PERSIS received one of its latest performances this week by the orchestra Harmonie St. Cecilia in Dutch city of Voorhout.
Born in 1959 in Nashvile, Tennessee, James L. Hosay started playing trumpet in in his teenage years. After high school he joined the U.S. Army as a trumpet player and graduated from the U.S. Armed Forces School Of Music. For 18 years he served on the Arranging Staff for The United States Army Band in Washington, DC.
