Iran: Workers in Shiraz enter fifth day of protests

More than 200 workers at Shiraz Telecommunications factories protested in front of the Fars Governor’s building for a fifth straight day to demand unpaid wages.

The Shargh Newspaper reports that the group has been using continuous whistles to draw the attention of public officials to their demands.

The protesters have told Fars News Agency that they have not received their wages for more than 26 months. They claim that in his last trip to Shiraz, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told factory administrators to extend financial assistance to the workers, but so far they have received no money.

The head of the Fars Employment Council, Hashem Shamshiri, said the problem stems from the transfer of the Telecommunications factories to the private sector and he called on Parliament to respond to the workers’ demands.
