“In fact film-makers in Iran have always been confronted by regulations. Some borders have already been defined and pre-set for them – they have to comply with these limitations when they work. It has always been like that and everybody is used to it.
“These limitations are either down to censorship or political changes, which in turn affect the artistic editorial decisions. Film-makers have always been faced with this. It’s nothing new. Iranian film-makers have worked like that from the beginning. Basically, these limitations are sometimes tougher and sometimes easier, but film-makers know that there are ways and means of getting around these boundaries and not fully comply with them. Sometimes that can spark even more creativity.”
