HUMAN BOMB: Sarkozy saves kindergarten class threatened by man strapped with explosives

Sarkozy first gained national attention because of the “Human Bomb” incident in 1993 during which an entire kindergarten was taken hostage by a man strapped with explosives.

While serving as Neuilly’s mayor Sarkozy negotiated with the suspect for their safe release. After the two-day siege, the children all escaped unharmed  after the “Human Bomb” was killed by French RAID police. Following this incident, Sarkozy was awarded a medal of honour and became budget minister under Prime Minister Edouard Balladur.
