BRAVEHEART: Will the United Kingdom Outlive The Queen’s Jubliee?

Queen Elizabeth is touring Scotland as one of the last stops marking her Diamond Jubilee. ( See Pictures). Yet despite her immense popularity and well deserved respect earned during her long reign, never has the future of the United Kingdom but also beyond that of the status of the Commonwealth nations been subject to so much debate as it has been this year. Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond set out the question he intends to ask voters in a referendum on Scottish independence. The UK government in turn launched a consultation on the SNP’s forthcoming referendum on Scottish independence, asking for public views. (Source: persianrealm.com)

Queen’s Jubilee tour of Scotland continues :

BBC reporter Nicholas Witchell describes independence as ‘break up’

Although in previous years recurrent debates on the parting of Australia and Canada from Great Britain have occurred with little delivery, the official stance of Jamaïca’s new Prime Minister who was elected on the vow of parting peacefully from the United Kingdom and declaring a Republic has sent a strong signal to London’s political establishment (See related blog).

However the British Monarchy’s greatest challenge seems closer to home. If in Northern Ireland for example the Queen’s gestures of reconciliation and appeasement were appreciated such as the historic handshake of the Queen with former IRA commander Martin McGuinness (See related news), Scotland, on the other hand, will be deciding on it’s future status, in a referendum due in 2014.

Last January Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond set out the question he intends to ask voters in a referendum on Scottish independence. The UK government in turn launched a consultation on the SNP’s forthcoming referendum asking for public views. (See Related Complete BBC Coverage)

The final outcome of the referendum will certainly determine the future of the United Kingdom and beyond that it’s very own relationship to the world. A YES vote could reshape it’s relationship towards the Commonwealth nations as well as redefine it’s current eurosceptic policy towards a European integration (UK is not yet a member of the eurozone and still attached to it’s own currency).

The Story of Scot Hero William Wallace (1297-1298)

Sir William Wallace (born c. 1272, died 23 August 1305) was a Scottish knight and landowner who became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence.[3] Along with Andrew Moray, Wallace defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, and was Guardian of Scotland, serving until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk. In 1305, Wallace was captured in Robroyston near Glasgow and handed over to King Edward I of England, who had him hanged, drawn, and quartered for high treason and crimes against English civilians. Since his death, Wallace has obtained an iconic status far beyond his homeland. He is the protagonist of the 15th century epic poem The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie, by Blind Harry. Wallace is also the subject of literary works by Sir Walter Scott and Jane Porter and of the Academy Award winning epic film Braveheart. (More Here)
