Sixers center Joel Embiid, a rising NBA superstar, played the best game of his career on Wednesday night when he scored 46 points on the Lakers at the Staples Center. It wasn’t just a personal best though; Embiid made history. Embiid’s stat line—46 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and seven blocks—has never been reached in NBA history.
The game was hyped, in large part because it showcased young up-and-coming NBA stars Embiid, Lonzo Ball (Lakers) and Ben Simmons (Sixers). Simmons had a solid game, but the more hyped Ball was an anemic 1-for-9 from the floor, 0-for-6 from 3-point range, and scored only two points.
Embiid’s stat-line was certainly impressive, but his post-game jab at the Ball family is what caught my attention. In a seemingly innocuous Instagram post, Embiid managed to shit on entire Ball family, including Lakers rookie guard Lonzo and his loud mouthed dad Lavar.
He posted the following and tagged his location with ‘Lavar, Fars, Iran.’
I laughed but immediately thought, where the heck is Lavar, Fars, Iran? Is that even a real place?
Google to the rescue!
Turns out that Lavar, Fars, Iran is indeed real. It’s a really tiny town in the south of Iran (in the Fars Province, also known as Pars), near the Persian Gulf. As of the 2006 census, Lavar’s population was a mere 1,042.
Thanks to a wicked sense of humor, Embiid has built a reputation as a must-follow social media personality. And like his improving basketball skills, his social media might be developing into something even more potent; an educational tool! I’ve appreciated Embiid’s game and personality, but now love him even more for dropping knowledge about Iran’s geography!
