The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said on its website.
The Treasury Department said it was imposing sanctions on Zarif for acting on behalf of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Javad Zarif implements the reckless agenda of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and is the regime’s primary spokesperson around the world,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
Zarif responded on Twitter, saying the sanctions have “no effect on me or my family, as I have no property or interests outside of Iran”.
He added, “thank you for considering me such a huge threat to your agenda.”
The US' reason for designating me is that I am Iran's "primary spokesperson around the world" Is the truth really that painful? It has no effect on me or my family, as I have no property or interests outside of Iran. Thank you for considering me such a huge threat to your agenda.
Tensions have escalated between the US and Iran following US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal last year from a 2015 international nuclear accord with Tehran.
Fears of a direct US-Iranian conflict have risen since May with several attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf, Iran’s downing of a US surveillance drone, and a plan for US airstrikes on Iran last month that Trump called off at the last minute.

Understandably so as he is in a league above any of the WH diplomats (if you can call them that). Safe to say @JZarif has been a thorn in their side. Hence the efforts to limit his mobility when in the US & refusal to deal w/ him. https://t.co/Au3N3YQyb8
This is likely the moment that cements @SecPompeo as quite possibly the least effective Secretary of State in the history of the US. The constant lies, contradictions, bullying and inability to exercise an iota of diplomacy has made him & the WH a farce in int'l circles. https://t.co/m7BMA7kKGX
