A sober look at SAVAK
June 11, 1998
The Iranian
Manouchehr Hashemi was one of the longest serving senior officers of the Iranian secret service under the Shah. He worked for the SAVAK for 22 years until it fell apart during the 1979 revolution. In the years since, he has been living in Europe and keeping busy: he has written a 650-page history of this most-feared institution of the Pahlavi era. Payam-e Emrooz (Today's Message), Iran's best current affairs magazine, ran the following pages from Hashemi's critical and professional inside look at the former secret service. (It wasn't clear if it has been published into a book or not). If you want to skip the Payam-e Emrooz introduction, click on Page 2. (in Persian)
