Khatami again stresses detente policy

August 1, 1999, Teheran (dpa) - Iran 's moderate President Mohammad Khatami in a meeting Sunday with the new Swiss ambassador to Teheran stressed Iran 's intention to continue its detente policy in international affairs.

``The holy Islamic book Koran has advised us Moslems not to impose oppression on anybody while at the same time not to accept oppression by anybody, either,'' Khatami added.

Tim Guldimann, the newly appointed ambassador of Switzerland, said Iran was an important country in the region and that the Swiss government was pleased about the consolidation of ties between Iran and Europe.

The Swiss embassy in Teheran looks after the interests of the United States in Iran and its charge d'affaires was summoned to the foreign ministry last January when Iran voiced its strong protest and held the U.S. responsible for the missile which landed in Abadan and damaged an Iranian border town during a U.S. bombing attack on Iraq.

Iran and the U.S. have maintained no diplomatic relations for almost two decades but after the period of hostility relations have slightly improved since Khatami's presidency in 1997.
