Domestic News desk: An informed source told us: The head of the Expediency Council [and former president] Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani will compete in the sixth Majlis elections, which will be held during the latter days of the current year [February-March 2000]. His objective is to create a balance between the country's legislative and executive authorities.

On the basis of this report, Hashemi-Rafsanjani will be nominated as a candidate from Tehran's constituency. The response among various political circles, following the disclosure of this report in recent days, has been varied. Some influential persons have declared that they opposed the idea of adding his name to the list of their party as a candidate.

Hashemi-Rafsanjani represented the people of Tehran for two terms in the Majlis and during the same two terms he was the speaker of the Majlis. If he were to compete in the forthcoming elections, it is predicted that he would be nominated as a candidate representing all the active factions. And it is predicted he would be once again be elected by the deputies as the speaker in the sixth term of the Majlis.
