Moderates launch last-minute bid to pardon former Tehran
mayor
TEHRAN, May 5 (AFP) -More than 70 moderate Iranian MPs and government
officials called Wednesday for the pardon of former Tehran mayor Gholamhossein
Karbaschi, due to begin serving a two-year jail term on Thursday.
The officials sent a letter asking supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
to pardon Karbaschi, the conseravtive Kayhan International newspaper reported.
Karbaschi, a leading reformer close to moderate President Mohammad Khatami,
has been free since his conviction last year on corruption charges.
But he was issued a warrant last week indicating he would have to turn
himself in no later than Thursday.
