Khatami visits Qatar on final leg of Arab tour
DOHA, May 19 (AFP) - Iranian President Mohammad Khatami flew into Qatar
on Wednesday on the third and final leg of a week-long tour of Arab countries,
officials said.
They said Khatami was to hold a series of talks with the emir, Sheikh
Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, focusing on economic cooperation. Several accords
have been prepared for signing.
The head of Iran's presidential office, Mohammad Ali Abtahi, said in
a Doha newspaper interview that Khatami would hold talks here on "strategic
relations," as well as a project for Qatar to supply Iran with drinking
water.
The president's two-day mission to Qatar, which has good political ties
with Iran, follows visits to Saudi Arabia and Syria.
"The results of the visit (to Saudi Arabia) ... will have a positive
impact on the whole region," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal
predicted on Wednesday.
