Iranian opposition meets in Iraq
BAGHDAD, May 17 (AFP) -Thousands of Iranian opposition figures wound
up a two-day meeting in Iraq on Monday, setting a target of May 2001 for
the overthrow of the Tehran government, the opposition People's Mujahedeen
said.
Iran's main armed opposition group said the meeting was held at one
of its bases but did not disclose the location. The debate focused on the
armed campaign against Tehran. The Mujahedeen has bases near the Iranian
border and uses Iraqi territory to mount cross-border raids.
Its leader Massud Rajavi said at the meeting that the government of
the Islamic republic would be overthrown "before the presidential
elections of May 2001," revising earlier predictions which have failed
to materialize.
