Police arrest several suspects in connection with bomb
blast
TEHRAN, Sept 17 (AFP) - Iran's security forces have arrested several
people in connection with a bomb blast which killed at least two people
Thursday at a holy site in the northeastern city of Mashhad, state radio
reported Friday.
"Several suspects were arrested here Thursday in connection with
the bomb blast," said a security official from Mashhad, but did not
give the exact number detained or the motive for the attack.
The official IRNA news agency had originally said that eight people
were killed at the holy site of the mausoleum of Imam Reza in Mashhad,
but later revised the figure down to two.
Of the ten people reported injured in the blast, seven were released
from hospital just hours later, radio said.
The bomb, placed in a rubbish cart near the shrine, killed a refuse
collector and a pilgrim at 3:00 p.m. (1030 GMT), the agency said.
The blast blew out windows of nearby shops and houses.
Shortly after the explosion a crowd of local people gathered near the
Shiite Muslim shrine shouting slogans condemning the attack.
Iranian state radio, quoting a security official in Mashhad, said a
car was also damaged in the explosion but gave no indication about who
planted the device.
