Iran 's population reaches 64 million
July 29, 2000, Teheran (dpa) - Iran 's population has reached 64 million,
the state television reported Saturday.
According to the latest census, the population increased by 4 million
compared to the results of the last census in 1996, according to Iran 's
Statistics Organisation said.
The population growth rate ranged between 1.2 and 1.3 per cent, down
from 3.2 per cent in 1985 and 1.5 per cent in 1996, the report said.
The capital Teheran is still the most heavily populated city with an
estimated 12 million people during the day and 8 million at night.
The official news agency IRNA reported Saturday that the marriage rate
had decreased in the last six months by 3 per cent compared to the same
time period last year, while the divorce rate had increased by 13 per cent
within the same time period.
