of films from Iran presented by the UCLA's Film & Television Archive.
FRIENDLY PERSUASION screens on Saturday February 19th at 7:30 PM at
UCLA's James Bridges Theatre in Los Angeles.
Jamsheed Akrami's feature length video documentary examines the realities
of filmmaking in Iran.. Three generations of Iranian filmmakers are interviewed
including Abbas Kiarostami, Dariush Mehrjui, Bahram Beyzai who form the
new wave of Iranian cinema; Masoud Kimiai, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Rakhshan
Bani Etemad and Ebraheem Hatami Kia all post revolutionary trail-blazers;
and emerging talents such as Majid Majidi, Jafar Panahi and Tahmineh Milani.
The documentary explores the issues these filmmakers face working in
Iran; issues ranging from censorship to women's issues in a male dominated
society, to the frustrations faced by filmmakers who sometimes face a
lack of recognition at home in the face of kudos and appreciation received
at international festivals abroad.
