Sweden lodges bribery complaint against its Teheran embassy

STOCKHOLM, April 7 (AFP) - Sweden's Foreign Ministry has taken the unusual step of lodging a formal complaint with police here against its embassy in Teheran over allegations of bribery, ministry officials confirmed Wednesday.

This followed reports in the daily paper Dagens Nyheter that personnel at the embassy in Iran had taken bribes in return for delivering Swedish visas and residence permits.

It said there had also been attempts to bribe the Swedish immigration office's representative in Teheran by people trying to get into Sweden.

There was no immediate word on whom the complaints were against among the seven diplomatic staff and 15 local Iranian employees.

Dag Klackenberg, the ministry's foreign missions director, told TT news agency: "Our inspectors have returned from Teheran and the findings in their report have led to this decision."

Mats Marling, Sweden's ambassador in Iran, said in a television interview here that the procedure was "unusual" but would not disrupt the functioning of the embassy in Teheran.
