THE QAJAR EPOCH Culture, Art & Architecture in Qajar Persia 2-4 September 1999 The 'Qajar Epoch' conference will be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London from the 2nd until the 4th of September 1999. The focus of the conference will be on the Culture, Art & Architecture of the Qajar period. The conference is part of a two conference series. The second conference, which will focus on Religion and Society of the Qajar Period, will be held in September 2000. The purpose of the conferences is to invite both established and younger scholars in the field to present their most recent research, new interpretations or assessments of the period. Papers must be presented either in English or Persian and should not exceed 35 minutes so as to allow 10 minutes for discussion. The organisers reserve the right to refuse any proposal not corresponding to the object and the academic level of the conference. Papers will be presented by theme and arranged by subject in sequential sessions.

The conferences are organised and sponsored jointly by the British Institute of Persian Studies and the Iran Heritage Foundation.

The exhibition of Qajar art, which will be on display at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York and the Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles from October 1998 until May 1999, will also be on view at the Brunei Gallery in the School of Oriental and African Studies during the time of the first conference. The Iran Heritage Foundation has been able to bring this exhibition to London for the period from July to September 1999. This will be the first major exhibition exclusively devoted to Qajar art to be shown in Europe. It brings together some of the finest examples of Qajar art from public and private collections throughout the world, including little-known reserves from the collections of the Louvre in Paris, the Royal Asiatic Society in London, the Hermitage and Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and many others.

If you would like to present a paper at the first conference in September 1999, please send a brief abstract (300 words) in English or Persian and a tentative title to: Qajar Conference, c/o PO Box 2256, London W1A 1YS, FAX: 0171-4317923, E-mail: info@iranheritage.com. The deadline for submission of applications is 15th February 1999. The organisers intend to publish most of the papers presented at both conferences and would therefore like to ask applicants only to propose papers which are of publishable quality and which the applicants would consent to be published in the volumes of the conference proceedings. Topics for papers for the first conference should fall within one or several of the following categories: Painting; Fine Arts; Architecture; Leisure and pastimes; Collecting, museums and cultural institutions; Press, publications and photography; Secular literature and poetry.
