Berkeley play based on Hedayat's story

BEHIND GLASS WINDOWS is a play written and directed by Torange Yeghiazarian based on a short story by Iranian writer, Saadegh Hedaayat, which will be staged in Berkeley, California, from October 17th through November 8, 1998.

Every body thought that the strangest thing Behrooz had ever done was to fall in love with a mannequin. But that was only the beginning_ BEHIND GLASS WINDOWS, a shattering love story that questions our perception of love and reality.

This contemporary stage adaptation of the original short story focuses on the illusory nature of love and relationships from the perspective of second generation Iranians growing up with dual traditions. Divided between the culture of their society and that of their home, they yearn for the comfort of the familiar while seeking the excitement of the new. Within this context, the play explores the true meaning of love, freedom and independence.

Presented by DARVAG ARTS FOUNDATION Darvag Arts Foundation is an artists' cooperative based in Berkeley whose mission is to produce plays, from published and original texts, that explore the changing experience of the Iranian-American community. Darvag strives to introduce to its audience the Iranian culture using traditional and alternative forms with an expanding emphasis on bilingual productions.

    A GOLDEN THREAD PRODUCTION

GOLDEN THREAD PRODUCTIONS is a dynamic, multicultural ensemble of people who support the presentation of theatrical works, original writings or adaptations, that are centered on the issues of the Middle East and its people. We firmly believe that our common experiences as human beings outweigh our cultural and political differences, and that the universal umbrella of theatre is innately suitable for a magical exchange between the East and the West. GOLDEN THREAD PRODUCTIONS is a fiscally sponsored project of The Intersection For The Arts.

Torange Yeghiazarian is an Iranian-born San Francisco Bay Area theatre artist and a San Francisco State University alumnus. In the fall of 1997, Torange adapted and directed Aristophanes' Lysistrata under the title OPERATION NO PENETRATION, Lysistrata97! This adaptation focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. In the fall of 1994, Torange wrote and directed the play Waves, staged at the San Francisco BAIT Fringe Festival to favorable critical and audience response. Waves depicts the friendship of two radical Iranian women who meet again twenty years after the Iranian revolution.
