Unrest
Members of Iran's largest student group, the Office for Fostering Unity,
stage a sit-in outside the Agriculture College Saturday, August 26, 2000,
against Islamic street vigilantes who disrupted a meeting where some leading
pro-democracy advocates were to speak. Pro-government vigilantes clashed
with reformist students in a western Iranian city, leaving a policeman
dead, Iran's state-run radio and a student said Monday. The clashes, which
began Thursday and reached a climax Sunday, injured 25 to 30students in
Khorramabad, about 300 miles southwest of Tehran, student leader Amir Hussein
Balali told The Associated Press. "We condemn the taking of the airport
by the pressure groups (vigilantes)," reads the banner on the right.
