Iran. Nazari, the main defendant, is accused of ordering an attack on a
Tehran University dormitory in July 1999 to break-up a student protest
over the closure of a reformist newspaper. At least one person was killed
and 20 injured in the raids. The attack set off the worst riots in Iran
in two decades and fuelled an ongoing reformist movement. The trial signaled
Iran's willingness to punish hard-liners who take the law into their own
hands. Hard-line vigilantes have frequently attacked critics of clerical
rule in recent years without facing legal retribution.
