KARBASCHI
* Khamenei orders Karbaschi's release, (Reuters) - Iran on Wednesday released Tehran's moderate mayor, whose arrest on graft charges had sparked protests and a high-level row between moderates and conservatives. Iran's state television said Gholamhossein Karbaschi was freed at the order of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It said Khamenei wrote to the judiciary asking for the mayor's release after receiving a letter from moderate President Mohammad Khatami which complained about ``executive problems created by Mr Karbaschi's arrest.''... full text
* Tehran mayor freed on bail , (AP) - Tehran's reformist mayor was freed from jail Wednesday after Iran's supreme leader stepped in to check a growing power struggle between government hard-liners and moderates. Flushed with the success of protests demanding that Mayor Gholamhossein Karbaschi be freed, well-wishers showered him with flowers when he arrived home later in the day. ``I really don't know how to give my appreciation. I am only a small servant of you,'' a smiling Karbaschi said. Tens... full text

* Iranian-American Community Urges the State Department to Modify The Humiliating Law of Fingerprinting and Photographing Iranian Civilians Going Through U.S. Customs, (PRNewswire) -The Iranian-American Republican Council (IARC) today urged Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and the State Department to modify the law requiring Iranians to be photographed and fingerprinted while going through U.S. Customs. This humiliating law has not only distressed and humiliated thousands of Iranians visiting their relatives in the United States, but is also an affront to the 1.5 million Iranian- American citizens and residents living in the U.S. Most importantly, it is a major deterrent to the budding dialogue between the two great nations. In its tenth annual convention in San Diego, California, the Iranian-American Republican Council (IARC) passed a resolution in favor of a commencement of dialogue between the two nations... full text

* White House Agrees to Radio Broadcasts to Iran, (The New York Times) - The Clinton administration, under pressure from Congress, has agreed to create a Persian-language radio service to beam anti-government propaganda into Iran, administration officials said on Tuesday. The White House and State Department had initially opposed the move, which was mandated in legislation last year. The administration, led by Thomas Pickering, undersecretary of state for political affairs, had argued that such a service would run counter to the administration's strategy of trying to find small gestures that would both bolster the standing of President Mohammad Khatami and perhaps even move Iran's ruling clerics to accept direct talks with the United States... full text

Hyphenated Iranians:
Misguided policies toward expatriates
By Siamak Namazi
The Islamic Republic remains extremely myopic in the way it sees and treats its citizens abroad. The officials' initial shortsightedness as a result of radical ideology and revolutionary zeal has so far only matured into an ignorance of the potentials and realities of a diaspora. While the recent policies of amelioration are encouraging, the government is yet to realize the true worth of Iranians abroad to that country... go to feature

LETTERS
There are good Iranian too
Dear C. Mohammadi,
I don't know who you are or where you live but what a letter ["Overly friendly, backstabbing "]! While I don't share your sentiments exactly, I understand where you are coming from. My first personal experience with an Iranian left a bitter taste in my mouth because of the betrayal of friendship I experienced. It wasn't until a few months later that I discovered how much lying, manipulating, exploiting, and deception had also occurred... And like you, I still want to be with these people, for in Iranians, because of all that they have experienced, I see a race of people caught between extremes: the best of the best is there as well as the best of the worst. But because you don't hear much of the latter, when you experience it, it comes as quite a shock... full text... Alex Bettesworth Alex_B@pacbell.net

Natutal lobbyists
[The] new generation of hyphenated Iranians does not harbor the barriers that handicapped their parents. Unlike their parents, they are not immigrants. They have been schooled and socialized in the country they are living. They do not keep an imaginary suitcase in the back of their mind, and have little incentive to permanently return to Iran. In its place, they have a much better understanding of the country they were born or raised in and a greater chance of succeeding than their parents. What does that mean for the government of Iran? Hyphenated Iranians are a potential wealth to the country that no lobby can ever achieve.
