An onager (Equus hemionus onager; surviving number estimated
at fewer
than 800) and her foal drink from a spring, revitalized from rains
in the
mountains bordering Iran's great salt desert, Dasht-e Kavir. During the
scorching months of summer when fresh water becomes scarce, onagers
drink salty water to survive. Onagers are found in the white areas below.
