ROME, March 9, 1999, (Reuters) - Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and his Italian counterpart Oscar Luigi Scalfaro review a ceremonial guard of honor before their meeting at Quirinale presidential palace in Rome Tuesday. Khatami is in Italy for a three day official visit, the first Western trip by an Iranian president in 20 years. Italy is rolling out the red carpet for the reformist Shiite cleric, who Italian ministers believe has set Iran on a course of modernization and has shown the best signs of Tehran wanting to open up to the West since the fall of the Shah.
