Trying to set up a meeting with a hooker goes embarrassingly
By Khosrow Tabrizi Motlagh
"K" stepped in with a well-dressed young woman. She looked,
well, not exactly like other hookers I had seen in Tehran. She was well-dressed,
if a bit "bad-hejaab". Okay, so her hair was dyed rather poorly,
but she looked more like a girl you would see at Passage Golestan or even
on Jordan Avenue. However before I had a chance to get a better look, "N"
very calmly and authoritatively told "K" and I to leave for a
while so they could chat. I wasn't happy, but decided not to make a scene,
given all the ears that were on us. We had a foreigner with us and were
changing between English and Persian ... GO

Oil producers finally agree to restrict output
March 23, 1999, (BBC) - Ministers from oil producing countries have
agreed to cut global production by 7% to bolster depressed oil prices.
The members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec)
and others meeting in Vienna have agreed to a reduction in output of 2.1m
barrels a day until April next year.
Cuts among Opec nations will amount to 1.7m while non-Opec producers
like Mexico, Norway, Russia and Oman have committed to additional cuts
of almost 400,000 barrels a day.
The Libyan Oil Minister, Abdullah Salem al-Badri, said after the meeting:
"Yes we have signed. We are happy, we have been asking for this for
more than a year."... FULL
Iranian man tells of death in ocean
Says shark killed wife after wind capsized kayak
BY MAYA SURYARAMAN
Mercury News Staff Writer
March 23, 1999
From his hospital room on the island of Maui, Mark Monazzami asked himself
in anguish Monday why the punishing ocean had taken his wife of just one
year but spared him.
Late Thursday afternoon, he and Nahid Davoodabai pushed off in a kayak
from what seemed to be the placid waters on Maui's west side. The Sunnyvale
residents could still see picnickers on shore when the wind and waves suddenly
turned on them, and their ordeal on the open ocean began.
Now, he said, his 29-year-old wife is dead from a shark attack, while
he recovers from 12 hours on tempestuous seas and two days on a seemingly
deserted island from which he never expected to be rescued. Until he found
a telephone on the island, Kahoolawe, and called 911 ... FULL
* One more "seen"
Asghar M. writes: If Arabs
and Jews can sit around the same table with their ingrained hatreds and
distrusts; if Blacks and Whites can reach a compromise with decades of
blood and hatred behind them; and if Protestants and Catholics can set
aside decades of vicious stomach churning infighting to prepare for a better
future, surely Hafez and Sa'di loving Iranians can swallow the bitter pill
of compromise. Or can they? ... FULL

Majid G. writes: It is definitely my personal taste, but I thought putting
a photo of 3-4
executed men in the first issue of The Tranian Times in the
new year wasn't very enchanting! :-) even though I have great respect for
the historic value of the photo.

Oil ends weaker but overshadowed by OPEC
LONDON, March 23 (Reuters) - World oil prices ended lower on Tuesday
but the weaker close was drowned out by market applause for an OPEC agreement
to cut oil supply to glutted markets. The cartel signed the deal on tough
new export limits which Saudi Oil minister Ali al-Naimi said were aimed
at lifting prices back to $18 a barrel ... FULL TEXT

Senators demand pressure on Russia
March 23, 1999, WASHINGTON (AP) -- A bipartisan group of 34 senators

Now we know
I choose [the dissidents] as people of the year in Iran because they
showed us how far away our society is from real democracy. They showed us
that we need to work very hard for the freedom of our country. This was
a big step that they took, and it cost them their lives. But now, we know
well what we need. We want a society in which saying the truth will not
cost any lives!
