One thousand times
By Shahrzad Irani

One thousand times a day, you tell me that you love me
And yet I do not believe you
Messengers come with great books declaring your love
And yet I cry in my sleep every night
With each season, you send a different flower perfuming my house
And yet I do not trust the message ... GO
... of the glory days

It is not too often (rare, in fact) that you see photographs of ancient
monuments featured in The Iranian. And there's a reason for it.
What remains of Iran's glorious past belongs to the past. Better to deal
with the present and think of the future.
But, who can deny it? Looking at these monuments certainly does bring
a wonderful feeling. Thank you Kaveh ... GO
Mystery Shrouds the Abrupt End of Scholars' Iranian
By Nora Boustany

The Washington Post
A group of 13 American scholars working in Iran from institutions such
as Yale, Tufts and the University of Pennsylvania were mysteriously pulled
out of Tehran on Aug. 25, 10 days ahead of their scheduled departure date,
and the U.S. government is offering no explanation.
According to a member of the group, the Swiss ambassador in the Iranian
capital--where the United States has no embassy and Switzerland handles
U.S. interests--alerted the students by telling them: "My orders are
to get you out as soon as possible, and that's what I am going to do."

Ramin Tabib writes: I think the
conclusions of the author ["Culture
of Karbala"] are rather one dimensional and overly generalizing.
1- In respect to culture of martyrdom, we Iranians or shi'ites are not
alone in our praise of martyrs, by any standard. Every culture has its
own martyrs upheld as archetypes. Christianity's praise of martyrdom starts
with Jesus and continues with St. Peter. African Americans revel in martyrdom
of ML King and Malcolm X. Even JFK is considered by some to be a martyr,
and his disciples are not shi'ites! And furthermore, how is praising archetypes/martyrs
a sign of rejecting modernism? ... FULL
* Shah let people hold hands
Maziar Shirazi writes: In response
to Kazem Mansouri's letter "Allah
knows best", I suppose getting a girl pregnant when you aren't
ready is certainly not a good idea. But preventing one from being able
to do such a simple thing as hold hands to express love is certainly an
invasion of one's deepest, most sacred rights ... At least that scumbag
of a Shah let people hold hands and walk down the street ... FULL
